Educational Outreach Project:
For Composers

Vox Musica, the Sacramento based women’s vocal ensemble, is pleased to announce their educational outreach project for the 2016-17 season wherein they will support composers interested in writing for women’s choral ensembles. Composers of any age, gender, creed, or nationality and composers who are in any stage of their career or level of experience are invited to join Vox Musica for an educational workshop on November 6th, 2016 from 3 – 6 pm at Beatnik Studios (723 S Street, Sacramento). This Educational Outreach Project has three phases and those interested can participate in individual or all of the phases.

PHASE I: Educational Workshop for Composers

About

At the workshop our music director, ensemble, and guest artists will discuss and demonstrate key compositional aesthetics important when writing for choral ensembles. This workshop is free and open to current/professional composers, students of composition and others interested in the compositional process for vocal ensembles. We are encouraging participants to bring with them compositional sketches and ideas so Vox Musica can read/review your material; compositional sketches are not required to participate in the workshop.

How To Participate:

PHASE II: Critique and Review of Musical Excerpts

About

Following the workshop, interested composers are encouraged to continue their relationship with our ensemble by preparing and composing works & musical excerpts based on specific text of a local poet for further exploration and critique. Materials will be submitted via our online system on November 18th, 2016. Submitted material will then be examined and critiqued by our professional artistic team. Feedback of all submitted material will be provided to the composers. Participation in this phase of our educational project is open to the public regardless of their participation in the other phases of our Educational Outreach Project.

How To Participate:

Compose a musical work or excerpt using text from one or more of the works found in Renée Aubern’s “To Swim in Your Hazy Head.” Submit a digital .pdf of your work via this online platform no later than November 18th, 2016. Compositions must be written for women’s voices (E3 – C6) and could include percussion. Critique and Review of your submitted works will happen at Vox Musica’s Nov 21st rehearsal. We welcome your attendance at this rehearsal.

PHASE III: Final Compositions for Performance

January 1, 2017

About

Composers will be encouraged to complete their works and submit them for consideration for a public performance. Completed compositions will be due on January 1st, 2017 and the winning compositions will be presented in concert on Vox Musica’s February 2017 “Voices in Poetry” concert project. Participation in this phase of our educational project is open to the public regardless of their participation in the other phases of our Educational Outreach Project. Be sure to read through the compositional guidelines details below.

Compositional Guidelines:
  • Each composition must be a setting of text from one or more of the works found in Renée Aubern’s “To Swim in Your Hazy Head.”
  • Each composer may submit up to four compositions.
  • It must be scored for women’s voices and within the ranges of (E3 – C6).
  • The part writing can be anywhere between 1-12 vocal parts but must not exceed 12 notes for the choir in any given chord.
  • It can be purely a-capella, or could include percussion accompaniment for one percussionist. Possible percussion instruments include: Percussion_Instruments.pdf
  • Works for any other instrumental accompaniment will NOT be considered.
  • Compositions must not exceed 25 minutes in duration.

How to Participate:

Submit Compositional Portfolio. Composition Portfolios can be submitted (A) via US Mail or (B) Digitally and must include:

  • A cover letter containing all necessary contact information and describing your composition.
  • Quality performance ready scores (pdf format if submitting digitally).
  • Recordings of your pieces are welcomed but are NOT mandatory (Compact Disc or MP3 format only).

Package together all requested portfolio materials, current contact information and provide your name on all enclosed documents.
