"Vox Musica will be joined by members of the Sacramento Taiko Dan group to perform music including Iris Shiraishi’s "Soaring" – a work written for two-part women’s voices and taiko drums."

The road less traveled is an apt description for some of the unusual concerts to be offered in spring 2010. In the coming months, Sacramento will see a rarely performed opus by Duke Ellington, the synergy of choral music and taiko drumming, and the expression of the American piano repertoire, among others. Here are five must-see concerts that embody a fresh spirit in bringing classical music to the concert stage.

THUNDER: Music For Taiko Drums and Women’s Voices
Vox Musica & Sacramento Taiko Dan

WHERE: St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1701 L St., Sacramento

It’s safe to say that choral music and taiko drumming have never been joined at the hip. But that unusual pairing will be the focus of this 12-member women’s chamber choir, which has shown an adventurous streak to concert programming since its debut in 2006. For this concert, the repertoire will include music inspired by the rhythms, spirit and music from Japan. Vox Musica will be joined by members of the Sacramento Taiko Dan group to perform music including Iris Shiraishi’s "Soaring" – a work written for two-part women’s voices and taiko drums.
