  RENEW

RENEW: A Vox Christmas ~ Vox Musica opens its seventh season on December 1st and 2nd with, RENEW: A Vox Christmas. This project is an musical adventure in which the the voices of Vox travel the 14th- and 15th-century territory of Morales and Guerrero, visit the 12th century of Perotin, and roam even earlier ages of plainchant, accompanied by the always sensitive and tasteful, often astonishing, saxophone and trombone improvisations of local jazz masters Steve Lishman and Dr. Dyne Eifertsen. Included on this performance are medieval chants, fifteenth-century hungarian carols, and three renaissance motets by the fairly unknown Castillian composer, Francisco Guerrero. Center to this concert project is the stunning presentation of a resetting of the Cristobal Morales motet, Parce Mihi Domine, renewed by improvised saxophone. Sometimes, these new melodies simply accompany; sometimes they renew the common; however they often transform the music into sublime and indescribable moments. RENEW: A Vox Christmas will be performed on Saturday, December 1, 2012 – 7:00 pm (6:15 pre-concert talk) and Sunday, December 2, 2012 – 5:00 pm, both at St. John’s Lutheran Church (1701 L Street, Sacramento, CA).

LEARN & HEAR: Join us before the concert on Saturday, December 1st at 6:15 pm for our “Learn & Hear” pre-concert talk which will be focused on how the musical elements of Medieval and Renaissance works are enhanced by the improvisational techniques of our instrumentalists. LEARN & HEAR: Learn about the music then hear it in the concert.

Local Orthodox musicians and several singers from Sacramento’s famed, Slavic Chorale have been working with Vox to enhance the authenticity of the music and they will be joining us in chanting and singing, adding to this project as a whole.
